Moving On Up

More fire cultists are discovered on the current level of the palace.  The party continues to battle on, making their way to the gate house and guards.  Fire giants are in gate house, and offer much more resistance than the fire cult lizard men.  Pressing forward the adventurers meet the pyrohydra pet that the fire giants have been keeping.

Finally claiming the gate house, the party take a rest before they make their way up into a court yard.  Two fire giants are tormenting a creature inside an iron bull.  With a surprise charge, the party overwhelm and vanquish the giants.  Freeing a crazed efreet, the party's subsequent scuffle draws out two waves of hell hounds.

Bring Out Your Dead

The party enters the room to a waiting fiery dinosaur babbling priest.  The battle is quick and brutal, but the group manages to survive.  Next door there are more fire cultists, but the Little Rascals get the drop on them and bushwhack the lizardmen.

Wandering around and back down, the party finds a hall of tombs.  Exploring carefully to the end, the party was a bit disappointed not finding anything so they decide to open a sarcophagus.  From the floor of the hall, out comes a big mean wraith.  The dread wraith was really tough, and the fight left the group feeling drained.

Ballista Backstabbing 101

Back tracking through the hallways, the party spies a fortified platform of fire cultist lizardmen.  The impressive iron ballista causes the party to act with unusual caution.  Sneaking up to the platform, Kushii and Luce invisibly start the ambush.  Billy has already maneuvered into his sniper position.  The party is surprised to find out that the lizardmen can breathe fire, and that fire seems to heal them a bit.  Just as the fight begins to go the party's way, a pyrohydra wanders around the corner followed by another clutch of cultists.  Kushii, Lars, and Zadora struggle to gain control of the top of the platform while Hazel, Max, Luce, and Billy direct their efforts at the fiery hydra.  Finally, the adventurers gain control of the platform.  Lars, with the help of Zadora, aims the ballista at the hydra.  With an arcane strike and a critical hit, Lars kills the hydra with the ballista.  Lars kicks back with the obligatory, "do I have to do everything around here".  Meanwhile Billy and Hazel are busy putting acid and cold on the pyrohydra stumps after Luce decapitates the heads.

Further exploration of the area reveals the cultist hatchery, a hydra nest, and a couple of common rooms.  The cultists have a nice vestry with a big statue.  Lars uses magic to look for secret doors and finds on located next to the statue.  The party prepares to open the door...

How I Wish You Were Here

Next the party scouts the room across hall, and there are voices talking in ignan.  Lars gets the impression that the residents are gambling.  Sneaking into the room the party observe a few efreeti, served by their kobold attendants, are drinking and gambling.  Lars devises a plan to provoke the efreeti by messing with their gambling dice.  The party sneaks into the room and gets the efreeti fighting among themselves.

The party begins to join the brawl, and things seem to be going as planned.  Then, with uncharacteristic lethality, Lars blasts the efreeti with a cone of cold and takes them down.  With careful diplomacy, the party exchange the lives and freedom of the efreet for wishes.

The first three wishes are used to restore the feeble minded efreet in the room, Iavesk the sad djinni, and the martyred efreet Sammadar.  Sammadar agrees to the exchange too, and grants three more wishes.  The party has six wishes now available to them.

We Gonna Let It Burn, Burn, Burn, Burn

Exploring past the room with the statue, Kushii discovers a really nasty molten brass trap.  Working around that, the party loots a store room.  The next discovery is a den of kobold slaves that are in pretty bad shape.  As the party begins the parley, some jerk devil slave master bursts into the room and starts trouble.  The fine upstanding adventurers give that jerk a beat down, just in time for his salamander buddy to enter from the hallway.  After some more butt kicking, the kobolds seem happy that their former masters are dead and agree to give some general directions for the party.

The next room over contains a feebleminded djinni (his name is Iavesk), who spends his hours crying.  Backtracking the party finds a room with several cages that are covered.  The party sends a kobold over, the first cage is empty and the kobold shrugs.   He peeks under the next cover and bursts into flames.  His crispy corpse crumbles to ash, as the party stares dumbfounded.  Lars raises a finger and points, "which one of you is going next?"   The kobolds cower, and the azer (Habanero Cockburn) volunteers to go.  He takes a look, but the flames don't seem to bother him as he shouts "pyrolisks".  The party gathers them up with the b-team and moves along.

Descending back down a stairway, the party storms into a room filled with fire mephits and azer.  Combat goes quickly as the party is more than a match for the rooms defenders.

Splish, Splash, She Was Taking A Bath

A few rounds after the elder elemental falls, a group of large elementals come into the hall to continue the battle.  The party makes quick work of them and resumes the exploration of the hall.  In one room, they find a mirror that scries into the other areas of the reliquary.  The ghost dude shows up in the mirror again and yammers on about some artifact called the Impossible Eye being the key to the curse upon the palace.

At the last room, there is a fountain that fills the room with moisture and is cooler in temperature.  This provides some relief from the heat of the rest of the palace.  From out of the fountain, a marid takes shape and tells the party of her entrapment, the curse of the palace, the history of Jhavuhl, and what is probably the key to escaping.  The party agrees to help free her.

Reaching the end of this section of basement, the party goes back through the treasury to travel the molten canal.  At the other end, they find a brass boat hovering above the molten flow.  The party quickly move up the stairs behind the boat, and travel upward to a large room overlooking the flow below.   A brass juggernaut attacks from out of its alcove, but is simply too slow to surprise the party.  Defeating it quickly, the party travels over a smaller flow to a secret door.  This door leads up into a sewer drain on the level above.

Oh, Oh, Oh, I'm On Fire

Arriving at the top of the stairs, the group enters a reliquary.  There are many open and empty chests on pedistals, and a dead efreet (Sammadar) hanging by his feet in iron shackles.  Grovth cries out in anguish as the azer look nervously at each other.  Lars comforts Grovth, "There, there, buddy.  We'll kill that nasty Jhavuhl who is responsible for this."  Grovth nods and saves his rage to avenge his dead friend and master.

Exploring further down the hall, Kushii notes that there is something funny about a mirror.  Stepping back as she does, fire elementals begin pouring out of secret doors on opposite sides of the hall.  Grovth and the azer join in and help the party, through a long grueling battle.  The leader of the fire elementals is an elder, in the shape of a dragon.  He proves especially tough, as a few azer fall to his brutal slams.  The party is victorious, and Grovth survives to continue his quest, as does an azer named Habanero Cockburn.

As The Worm Turns

The party finally makes its way out of treasury, and wonders through a couple rooms with really elaborate frescoes.  In one of the rooms, the adventures stumble upon a group of azer mamluks.  They are barricaded against something from the far entrance.  Stranger still, they are led by a bodak named Grovth.  Apparently they were separated from their master, an efreet named Sammadar, when the creature at the bottom of a stairwell attacked.

After a bit of diplomacy, everyone agrees they should team up and battle the worm-like creature together.  Prepared, the group attacks the creature (the Get of Iblis) as Lars recalls.  Several of the mamluks fall while the battle ensues.  Ultimately, the combined groups overcome the horror at the bottom of the stairs.

Lars sneaks in a control undead, and makes friends with the bodak.

Out Of The Frying Pan

Sailing off the edge of the world, into the mistbound realm of the Isle of Not, the party meets with the proteans.  As the friendly shaitan suggested, the proteans can send the party back through one of their primal chaos pools.  The party prepares themselves, and hops through the portal.

Swirling through a vortex of wind and fire, the party comes to in a brightly lit room with four archways.  For golems made of brass attack the party a couple of rounds later.  The brass men put up a good fight, but the party is victorious and loots the room.

Each of the archways is filled with a curtain of fire.  After studying the inscriptions above the doorways, and a couple of divination spells, Lars figures out that there is a numerical pattern clue.  So the party begins to take the doors in the prescribed pattern.

A ghostly visage talks to the party, though a mirror in one of the rooms.  He tells the tale of how the palace is cursed, trapping everyone inside, and that the party is the key to freeing him.

Everybody Must Get Stoned

Sneaking down into the deepest party of the shaitan layer, the party comes into Obherak's room.  Quickly coming into position, Luce strikes with death-from-above while Billy provides supressing fire.  The party engages, and the two attending shaitan keep the heavies from supporting Luce.  The first two rounds Luce takes a real beating, as the supporting party members struggle to get to him.  Only after one of the attending shaitan falls, is anyone able to help Luce.  Obherak falls next, and the remaining shaitan does not have a chance.

More Shaitan Than You Can Shake A Stick At

The party continues to explore the shaitan lair, in the Golden Bowl.  Moving from wing to wing, off of the main chamber.  The shaitan are difficult opponents, turning the floor to mud only to solidify it the next round.  Moving in an out of the stone, keeps the party on their toes.  But, after adapting their tactics, the party successfully removes the bulk of the shaitan presence.

The Shaitan Have Hid The Fan

The party makes their way to the Golden Bowl, home of the Jhavuhl-loyal shaitans.  After landing on a sandy beach, the group heads inland through a desert.  Approaching a rocky rise, the party scouts the perimeter of the bowl.  A large stone structure rests at the bottom of the bowl.  Heading down into the valley, the party approaches the building and is challenged by a gynosphinx.  After playing the riddle game, an irritable and impatient shaitan berates the sphinx.  As Lars tries to mediate, the shaitan attacks.  The gynosphinx, fed up with the shaitan, attack her master as the shaitan summons gargoyles to help the attack.  The party is victorious and the sphinx provides some advice about the shaitan lair.

Descending into the tunnel, sealed by a stone shape spell, the party goes down into an enormous chamber with an imentesh protean.  The protean is unconscious, barely alive, imprisoned in the stone cyst floating in the middle of the room.  As the party looks around and discusses what to do, a pair of stonespike guardians attack from two of the four doors.  The guardians are tough, and the party takes a beating before defeating the creatures.

The party destroys the stone cyst, and revives the protean enough that it escapes the shaitan lair.

If I Had Just One Wish

The party tracked a Gnoll warband to isolated tower.  They circled around, attempted to kill guards, but combat opened up into a full brawl.  One efreet was in a large giant shape, the other a medium sized human female.  The gnolls did not put up much of a fight, after a couple of good blows, Lars fires off a disintegrate spell to soften him up for a wish-deal.  Sadly the spell is quite effective and reduced the efreet to ash.  The other efreet falls before Lars can say, "about my wish...".  The remaining gnolls inside the tower offer little resistance to the party.  The party grabs up the offerings that the gnolls had brought to the tower, plus what they find in the efreeti's rooms above.

Bubble, Bubble, Boil and Trouble

The party returns to Artel Norrin, the azer weaponsmith wizard.  Artel's eyes light up and he is excited to begin forging the weapon of Jhavhul's demise.  With the extra crystals, he will be able to make some additional ebon flasks.  They should be quite handy in battling fiery opponents.  Artel asks the party to give him several days to work, and when they return the weapon will be ready.

The party heads out to explore other islands in Kakishon.  Hazel names Rishindra as the next destination, and the galley complies.  Sailing there take a day, and gets to experience the Isles of Night.  The Isles of Night are a group of islands kept in perpetual twilight by the massive enchantments of Nex.  The party sees the waypoint, when two lesser ghawwas rise up out of the water and attack the boat.  Fighting ensues with one ghawwas boiling the ocean around the boat, while his partner moves in and flails the party.  Bringing their might to bear, the group overcomes the rogue divs and land at the waypoint.

Establishing the usual base, Rhayhan, Rubbish, Charles-and-Mambo, make camp.  The rest of the party heads out to explore the dark jungle depths of the island.  After a while, Khazzaur picks up a trail of gnolls.  Following the trail, the jungle explodes into movement with three massive centipedes attacking the party.  Countering swiftly, the party chops the centipedes up.  Billy cooks up some kind of stew so foul that even Luce takes a pass.

Burning Ring of Fire

The party follows the invitation and meets with Dilix Mahad, a peaceful Shaitan, not happy with Jhavul's intentions on bringing destruction.  Dilix warns the party about the Jhavul-friendly faction of Shaitan led by Obherak, who want to make Kakishon their permanent home.  And also about Proteans, who after being forced to create Kakishon, are desperate to destroy it.  Dilix offers aid to the party if they need it, whichever faction they choose.  Dilix knows the Proteans have the means to escape Kakishon, but is not quite sure if the Shaitan posses the same.

The next destination, chosen from Rayhan's copy of the map and copious notes, is Isle of the Dead.  Not surprising, the island appears completely lifeless...  except for a cat.  Then somebody did something to irritate a couple of invisible stalkers.  Then, inside what was to be Nyx's tomb, a wyrmskull offers lots of advice and information about Kakishon and those that dwell within.  Venema, the former dragon, tells the tale of Andrathi, who is toasted into the bronze gates.  Andrathi's cat Spooky seems to favor Kushii.

Over on volcano island Artel the azer is busy reforging weapons, but the party makes a nice parley and Artel is willing to help.  He mentions the possibility of a special weapon that could be made from certain crystals that grow on top of a spire in a null magic zone on the north end of the isle.   He would have procured them himself, except the anti-magic makes getting by the undead that dwell there difficult.

Approaching the spire the party notices that it is infested with ghasts.  The ghasts seem to not want to leave the anti-magic area around the spire.  Luce decides to charge in, after everyone notices that Billy is missing already.  Without the use of spells, and some very tentative combat tactics, the ghasts do surprisingly well.  That is until Kushii triple-crits and Khazzaur starts wading through the mob of undead.  Billy makes it to the top of the spire and recovers five crystals to take to the dwarf.

Welcome to the Jungle

The party arrives in Katapesh via the portal, and immediately heads for the docks to meet the captain of the Sunset Ship.  Meanwhile, Kushii and Billy are in Absalom to nab Tamir, before he escapes.

The captain laughs and comments on how delightfully mercenary the party is, letting loose such a potentially destructive creature for payment.  The party is paid 45000 GP, in high quality rubies.  With a tip of his hat, the captain boards his ship and sails out of the harbor.  Happy about the payout, the party returns to Rayhan's villa to see how he is making out with the scroll.

Rayhan has good news, he has figured out how to open the scroll and will be testing it in a few days.  The party goes on a resupply and equipment run, Lars spends more time fabricating magic times.  One evening, Rayhan announces he is ready and the party gathers in his lab.  Invoking a spell, he begins touching various islands on the map and unlocks it.  Unexpectedly, there is a crackle of lighting, darkeness, a sense of falling.  The entire group has been pulled into the magical vortex, and the group spies a fiery efreet army rising up as they are falling.  A giant of an efreet grins and nods as he ascends, the party falling.

Darkness.

Softly, the light comes with the soft seashore sound of waves rolling onto a beach.  The touch of wet sand surrounds the party members as they wake up, having landed safely on a beach.  Getting their bearing, the group starts moving about the beach.  Rayhan begins speculating that the magic of the scroll, indeed Kakishon itself, may be failing.  Lars rambles on about Rayhan being a hedge mage, and causing all of this.  Luce wades out to relieve himself in the deep blue sea.  The hydra nearby takes offense and attacks.

After a tumble in the shallows, the party searches the shoreline and surrounds.  There is a stone hut with provisions nearby, next to a dock.  A sea turtle wanders up and looks at the party...  a sea turtle radiating magic with a scroll tube in its mouth.  The scroll invites the party to a hunt for the Golden Ram, and to a meeting once the party secures the horn.  Giving the boatman the egg, will tell the boat man to bring the PCs to the meeting.

The party wanders into the jungle looking for the Golden Ram.  A group of fiendish chargers come charging out of the jungle.  The party is startled, but Khazzaur cuts them down before they can do any real harm.

Finding the scent of the Golden Ram, the party follows a trail until they pick up its tracks.  Finally spying the Ram, they move in and the Ram charges.  The Ram proves to be a capable opponent, turning both Lars and Luce into gold.  Eventually the Ram falls under the might of the party,  and they recover the horn.  Resting in the waypoint hut, Lars and Luce revert to their fleshy selves the following day, just as Rayhan suggested that they might.

Egor, get my notes. Part 2

...continuation of 12/28/14

The party attacks the ESUs to draw them away from the Emkrah, so Lars can feed Eddie to it.  Egor is running from table to table, gathering his lab equipment.  Constanzo (the kasatha), stands calmly at the back of the cavern.  Back out of site, Zed the mad scientist-wizard, is shutting down whatever dastardly experiment he is running.

Constanzo yells back to Zed, "HE is here...".  Zed's only reply is "Dammit!".  A shimmering ghost-like form appears in the middle of the cavern, on the party's side of the invisible barrier.  Shimmering blue lines trace pattern in his skin, he appears not quite human.  "Attention, leave this mountain immediately.  All technological artifacts are to be left behind, no exceptions."  As he is speaking, dimension doors open and robotic constructs walk through and begin demolishing cabinets, benches, and pickled dwarf jars.

Lars, warns the party not to interfere with the new interlopers.  Constanzo tells Egor to leave for the gate now.  Egor, nodding and limping along with his bag of holding, muttering "yes, yes, yes".    The CTDs fall back into a position guarding the back passage way to Zed's room.  With one ESU down, and the other distracted, Eddie finally makes his way into the Emkrah's belly.  Suddenly surrounded by a nimbus of violet-black energy, the Emrak enters a dream-like trance.

The shimmering form begins chanting an incantation, while Constanzo responds with one of his own.  Luce charges at the CTDs, and passes through the space where the barrier had been.  The rest of the party works to finish off the last ESU to protect the Emkrah.  A quick glimpse of Zed, pushing some large metal artifact into an archway, is followed by loud otherworldly roar.  Constanzo barks, "something has come through Zed's gate.  Egor, leave now.  Dwarves of Hammerfalls, defend the portal."

The robots continue to smash the lab, as one of the pickled dwarves spring to life and attacks Kushii.  Some of the smaller robots have engaged the CTDs, but seemed to be hinders by a magical barrier.  Luce is not affected by the barrier and continues to carve pieces of zombie dwarf.  As the last of the cultists retreat, three frog-like demons materialize and begin attacking the party.  The loud roar continues as the squid-headed demon finally shows itself.

Things are looking pretty bad, Billy even digs into his special stash of cold-iron holy bullets.  Even the robots seem ill-equipped to fight off the horrible creatures.  Slowly the party brings down the creatures.  The squid-headed demon falls and the rest of its summoned minions return to the dark beyond.  The Emkrah awakes from its trance and blasts Kushii, Lars, Luce, and Billy with beams of chaotic energy, and goes through the portal where the cultists escape.

Everyone seems to recover, and the ghost like form introduces himself as Erasmus.  He states his claim that all of the artifacts in this mountain are his, and must be turned over immediately.  Lars looks for a opportunity, and asks what about the items the cultists made off with.  Erasmus states, return all of the items now, return what the cultists have taken, and he will pay each character 4000 GP and and the party ten percent of the value of the items they return.  Lars says, "What about 4500 GP per", and Erasmus replies, "Done."

Erasmus says the portal will take you to what ever destination you will it to.  It is a one-way trip.  Kushii and Billy head for Absalom to intercept Tamir arriving at the shipping docks.  The rest of the party returns to Katapesh, to Rayhan's villa to collect the reward from the Captain of the Sunset Ship.
